New Year Lion Dance

 

The Lion Dance event, held annually in Chinatown to celebrate Chinese New Year. The event is co-hosted by Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New England (CCBA), Chinatown Main Street (CMS) and Chinatown Business Association (CBA) and sponsored by local business organizations. Lion Dance is one of the ancient Chinese culture arts that is still popular today around the world in Asian populations. Lion Dance is used in celebrations, especially during Chinese New Year, business grand openings as well as in weddings and birthdays. Most if not all of the people performing the Lion Dance are trained martial artists. There are usually 8 to 10 troupes participating in the New Year Lion Dance event. First they would perform on stage for audience and then they would go door to door to each and all businesses around Chinatown to perform. It is an all day event, the event starts at around 10:00 am, by the time the troupes visited all the businesses, it’s usually close to 5:00 p.m.
